We always recommend that guests make the most of the autumnal season here. You can light the fire pit or hire our pizza oven and go in the hot tub at night time for some stargazing. If you desire to venture out, you can explore the local area and enjoy all that Mid Wales has to offer at this time of year! There is especially a lot to do in the local area in the October and November months. It is the perfect season for our guests to enjoy the outdoor events and festivities. From scenic walks through golden woodlands to pumpkin patches to fun social gatherings, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Pumpkin Picking – A Popular Autumn Activity
Visit the local pumpkin patches where you can handpick your perfect pumpkin for carving or decorating. This is a fun and family-friendly activity that gets everyone into the autumn spirit! Powells Farm Wales in Presteigne is a close by family farm near New Radnor. Here you can soak up the scenery, meet the farm animals and enjoy the great outdoors. On selected dates they host Mini Farm Powell experience sessions in October half term with children’s workshops. This is a great activity for guests of all ages to go and get in the Halloween spirit. Booking is essential and a must visit if your planning on staying at Squirrels Nest around the Halloween period!
Ghost Tours and Haunted Walks – A Cool Autumn Experience!
As Halloween approaches, join spooky ghost tours and haunted walks that delve into the eerie history of Powys. A great way to get into the Halloween spirit! Craig y Nos Castle in Powys is known as the most haunted castle in Wales. Feeling daring? Why not attend one of the castle’s regular paranormal investigation events? There is also a castle bar which offers warming spirits.
Spooky Halloween Film Night – An Autumn Favourite!
Cosy up with loved ones and enjoy classic and newly released Halloween films either at on of our treehouses or venture out to one of the local cinemas. Wyeside Arts Centre in Builth Wells or The Regent Cinema in Newtown often features movies with Halloween themes, old and new. The Squirrels Nest Team’s Halloween movie top picks are Scary Movie, Hocus Pocus, and The Nightmare Before Christmas!
Oktoberfest – An unusual Autumn Event
Raise a glass and enjoy traditional German beers, live music, and Bavarian cuisine at Powys’ own Oktoberfest celebration. The Strand Hall in Builth Wells’s annual tribute to Oktoberfest, named Hydref (October in Welsh). This event is a night of music and merriment with outstanding performances from local live bands, including folk and modern music. All finished off with an October Feast with traditional Bavarian food. This is a fun evening that is known to sell out fast and is a great Autumn annual event to look forward to!
Autumn Fairs – RWAS Mid Wales Autumn Fair – ‘Around & About’ and ‘Truck Fest’
Discover unique, handcrafted items at local craft fairs, the perfect place to find gifts and decorations for the holiday season. The RWAS Mid Wales Autumn Fair is held at the showground in Llanelwedd, a village near Builth Wells. The fair will be showcasing food & drink and arts & crafts from local vendors across wales. The Fair is a perfect day out for families looking for a bigger event with guaranteed family fun.
Autumn Foliage Walks Near Squirrels Nest
Explore the stunning countryside surrounding Squirrels Nest with a scenic walk at one of the popular walking routes available nearby. Witness the trees’ vibrant transformation as they shed their summer greens and put on a fiery display of warm hues. Some walking route suggestions include Offa’s Dyke Path, Elan Valley Reservoirs and Radnor Forest.
Harvest Festival – An Autumn Celebration
Join the community in celebrating the harvest season at one of many of the local churches taking part in their annual harvest festival service. There are numerous churches close to Squirrels Nest such as St Edward in Knighton, Holy Trinity in Llandrindod Wells, Saint David at Llandewi Ystradenni, or Saint Cynllo in Llanbister. As part of this festival, people enjoy singing, praying, listening to stories and decorating the church. As Mid Wales is rich in farming culture, there are many local communities that enjoy participating in this particular service. Firework Displays and Bonfire Night – An Autumn Must Do!
End your autumn with a bang at a spectacular firework displays, one of our favourite Autumn Events and Activities in Powys during this season. These events are the perfect way to welcome the upcoming winter season and is always a lot of fun for the whole family. There are several Firework displays held in the Powys area. These include Llandrindod Wells, Welshpool, Newtown, and the annual Kington Firework and Bonfire night. This event is packed full of bonfire night traditions inspired by the infamous Guy Fawkes. Local events hold scarecrow competitions and build Guy Fawkes models to throw on the bonfire, which is always a great family activity to get the kids involved in the festivities! On the day, there is toffee apples, sparklers, hot pumpkin soups, food vans and live music.
